NOSTALGIA FOR THE PAST. HOW THE FASHION OF THE PAST TRANSFORMS INTO NEW TRENDS

No one will be surprised if we say that fashion is cyclical. If you do not take into account the classics, which almost always remain unchanged, the “edgy” trends always return, albeit in a slightly different form.

Fashion critics call our era “meta-modernism”, the time in which fashion is rethought. Now not the innovation of looks is more important, but the ability to stylize them. Therefore, let’s discuss the causes of cyclicity and see what trends came to us from the past, and how to adapt them to our daily outfits.

REASONS FOR THE CYCLE OF FASHION

Speaking about the repetition of fashion, the first reason is nostalgia for the old good days. However, very often fashion borrows clothes and accessories that did not belong to the best years in terms of the economy – for example, the post-war period.

Specialists from the field of fashion forecasting say that it is a matter of psychological needs. So, for example, the emergence of military conflicts inevitably brings notes of militarism and universality into fashion, and well-being brings glitz, glamour, and not the most comfortable styles of clothing.

Speaking about modern fashion, you can notice the following: when the issue of protecting the planet is acute on the social agenda, hippie motifs from the seventies (natural shades, spacious silhouettes and environmentally friendly materials) penetrate into fashion, when everyone talks about feminism and equality, power dressing of the eighties comes into fashion (broad shoulders, “male” styles, wide trousers, etc.). That means, a request arises first – and then fashion is looking for a solution.

Let’s look at this year’s trends and try to find their sources.

REFERENCES IN TRENDS OF 2018/19

We will take those trendy nuances that fashion gurus have declared the must-haves of the season, and see where they came from and what was worn before.

Animal prints are almost a direct reference to the style of the late eighties and early nineties. It was only then that leopard print was combined with blue eyeliner, big hair and heels; now it is recommended to dilute it with sports casual and nude makeup.

Logomania. This is another feature of the eighties. Back then it was a sign of status, but now it speaks either of nostalgia or irony over the past of your brand.

Leather clothes. Leather trench coats, like in The Matrix, as well as leather jackets, dresses, trousers are a clear reference to the nineties, both “gangster” and grunge.

Silver. If it’s a reference to futurism, then we already saw this in the sixties, if silver shines like a disco ball, well, you guessed it, it’s a reference to the festive seventies.

Natural shades. Designers unanimously remembered the colors of chocolate, cinnamon and khaki – last time so many calm tones could be seen in the collections of the seventies and early eighties.

THE PAST TRENDS AND THE SPRING-SUMMER 18/19 COLLECTIONS

Similarly with winter trends, let’s see what tendencies will get back to summer trends:

Pleats, flounces and ruffles. We are getting ready to wear feminine outfits – and at the same time we remember that we could see such a romantic style before in the collections of the 2000s. We are happy to welcome you again!

Beach/camping style. In contrast to the previous point, the next summer trend is to look like you are going on a hike, to the beach or for a run: bike shorts, round bucket hats, fisherman’s vests and stuff like that – for cases when you don’t want to look like a princess.

Stonewashed denim. Yes, it’s just like in the nineties! Designers offer to wear denim dresses, shorts, T-shirts – anything, and the denim total look is also an option.

Macrame and lace. Knot weaving, net dresses, string bags, fringes, lace over dresses and other handmade things came to us from the seventies.

As you can see, almost every trend has already been used at some time. This suggests that it makes no sense to take fashion too seriously – but you can sort out your or your mother’s wardrobe, giving old clothes a new life. In addition, we recommend that you look at how this or that trend was worn “at that time” – this will give you new ideas on how to style fashion items. We wish you a lot of inspiration!
