BLACK TIE, SMART CASUAL OR COCKTAIL: DRESS CODE TYPES AND RULES

We live in a fairly democratic time: there are no prohibitions, everyone is looking for their own style and chooses clothes based on his or her own wishes. Hollywood celebrities, bloggers from social networks, and even our friends, colleagues and local influencers prove that there is no such rule that could not be broken.

If you’ve ever wondered what the words White Tie, Creative Black Tie, Cocktail mean, you’ve come to the right place. Get ready to learn all about the different types and dress code rules. Let’s go!

WHITE TIE

Of all the existing dress codes, this one is the most elegant and strict, it must be followed unconditionally. So, if you are lucky enough to receive an invitation to a holiday with this form of clothing, it is better not to violate the following rules:

A minimalist floor-length dress. You can open your hands, sometimes a slit is also allowed, but avoid ruffles, rhinestones and lace.

Only expensive jewelry. Gold, diamonds and jewelry will be more appropriate than ever. But forget about your favorite bijouterie.

Solemn accessories. A shaped clutch, elbow-length gloves just fit into White Tie.

BLACK TIE

This option is considered more relaxed than “white”, however, here girls are also advised to adhere to several important rules:

The length is still maxi, however, slits, lace, and beading décor are now acceptable.

An important role in the “black” dress code is played by color: it should be dim. Choose a dress in blue, chocolate, black or deep wine shades. Sometimes red is allowed at such parties, but the official version of Black Tie forbids this color as well.

You can skip diamonds and jewelry for such a party, limiting yourself to chains and rings made of gold or silver. But still avoid bijouterie.

CREATIVE BLACK TIE

It’s an option for real fashion icons! With such a dress code, you need to choose an outfit so that it is bright and memorable, but it does not go beyond the classic formal Black Tie style at the same time. It is important to stick to a dark color scheme for this option, but something extraordinary will do here – an all-lace dress or a tuxedo dress, or even a classic pantsuit! In addition, you can choose bright accessories. The main thing is to look elegant, not vulgar.

COCKTAIL

Lovers of shorter dresses, your time has come! There are already much fewer rules for cocktail dresses, and they are quite loyal:

The dress can be both maxi and midi length, or just cover the knees a little. It is advisable, however, not to wear ultra-mini.

Large watches, jewelry, unusual shoes and accessories like feather hairpins, brooches, etc. are acceptable.

You can choose both dark and light shades of outfits as a part of this dress code.

BUSINESS FORMAL

Let’s distract from parties, and remember about work! If you are invited to a conference or a serious business meeting, a dress code with that name may be mentioned. What does it mean?

White and black are the perfect shades for this dress code. However gray, blue shades are also acceptable, but to a lesser extent.

Business suits of all kinds are acceptable, as well as knee-length sheath dresses.

Leave the stilettos for parties, and for such an occasion, put on pumps with a stable heel. And do not forget about tights – stockings are a must for such serious meetings.

BUSINESS CASUAL

This kind of dress code is usually welcome in business center offices. Now let’s see what that means:

You can wear fitted clothes of a business style, and choose the knee-length. But different shades are already acceptable: shirts can be blue, gray, pink, striped or with a small print. The same goes for skirts and trousers.

Shoes with open feet and no tights are allowed.

Short sleeves are allowed for blouses and shirts.

SMART CASUAL

This is the most relaxed and democratic type of dress code. Therefore, if we are talking about it, it will be easier to say what not to wear:

Miniskirts and short shorts, especially denim.

Ripped jeans, sweatpants.

T-shirts with bright prints and inscriptions.
