BEST BOOKS ABOUT FASHION: HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR SENSE OF STYLE https://vovk.com/magazine/eu/luchshie-knigi-o-mode-kak-razvit-chuvstvo-stilya/ Thu, 18 Feb 2021 09:02:38 +0000 https://vovk.com/magazine/ru/?p=14431 A sense of style is not necessarily a natural talent given from birth. Like any other skill, it can be developed into something outstanding through study, vivid interest and practice. Well, what could be better for style development than good fashion books? Today I advise what to read about fashion from my personal top list. Save it, there is a lot of informative and unusual facts.

NEVERTHELESS, SHE WORE IT: 50 ICONIC FASHION MOMENTS BY ANN SHEN.

You will not only find a detailed history of fashion’s most important looks, but also a guide to the women who invented, created, and shook the world and society in this book with fantastic illustrations.

The book demonstrates the power of fashion as a political and cultural tool for change. It is filled with images of garments that were provocative for their time. The described looks include a revolutionary bikini; a presidential women’s trouser suit; a fringed, fitted dress, an informal outfit for women in their struggle for independence in the 1920s; Madonna’s shiny tapered bra; and the Collar of Dissent, the famous symbol of Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she went against the majority opinion.

CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVAS: KATE MOSS, MARC JACOBS, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, AND THE ’90S RENEGADES WHO REMADE FASHION BY MAUREEN CALLAHAN.

This book is a juicy plunge into the 90s without the sickly-sweet sheen of nostalgia. The author describes how the counterculture became chic with the arrival of Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen and other rioters of the late 20th century. Maureen Callahan, a veteran pop culture journalist, takes us back to the style turning point of the early 90s — when glamorous supermodels gave way to counterculture, when alternative became mainstream, and when fashion suddenly became the cradle of the most exciting artistic and cultural innovations. Glitter tops, acid dresses, flashy minis, a combination of lightweight fabric dresses and rugged leather jackets and boots have all brought fashion to the style icons whose stories are told in this book.

THE ONE HUNDRED: A GUIDE TO THE PIECES EVERY STYLISH WOMAN MUST OWN BY NINA GARCIA.

If you want to update your wardrobe from scratch, start with these 100 must-haves prepared by Nina Garcia, Project Runway Fashion Show Jury Member and ELLE Editor-in-Chief. She details what you need to have in your closet and why, and gives tips on how to combine them any time of the year. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is also explored in detail here: the book recommends buying the core of basic items (black dress, beige bodysuit and cardigan, classic coat, black trousers, blue high-waisted jeans, pencil skirt), and then combining them with more original elements that emphasize your individuality.

THE ORIGINS OF WOMEN’S TROUSERS https://vovk.com/magazine/eu/zhenskie-bryuki-istoki-proisxozhdeniya/ Tue, 25 Aug 2020 13:22:24 +0000 https://vovk.com/magazine/ru/?p=13681 Now we can no longer imagine our daily life without jeans, trousers, culottes or shorts. Trousers are no longer only casual garments: trouser suits can be found even on the red carpet. Some women even prefer suits rather than puff dresses for their weddings.

Trousers have long settled in women’s wardrobes. We wear them much more often than the skirts. After all, a sense of comfort is much more important than just a beautiful look.

We take this element of clothing for granted, but has it always been like this? How many of us wondered how long women have been wearing trousers?

Let’s explore the history of trousers together and their long journey to our closet shelves.

Surprisingly, women’s trousers are more than two thousand years old. Yes, you didn’t think so! In the east, women have worn this wardrobe element for centuries, but the situation in Europe was not so optimistic. It was a whole fight for the right to wear trousers.

GOING BEYOND THE COMMON

It all started with Amelia Bloomer, a feminist who fought for women’s rights. She was one of the first women to publicly wear pantaloons and a knee-length skirt, which caused a wave of rejection from society. For the record, this was 1853 and the concept of trousers, as it is now, was a little different.

But still, Coco Chanel made a real revolution. She was a woman who lived by her own rules and changed fashion in her own way. It was Chanel who first began to wear men’s trousers, which became a precedent in the fashion world. Coco created comfortable and beautiful trouser looks, in which any woman could feel great. If you want to feel like a rebel, like Coco Chanel, choose straight trousers from VOVK.

No less important was Marlene Dietrich. She was a bright personality not only in the domain of cinema, but in everyday life. Marlene was often seen in elegant trouser suits. And after “Morocco” movie, where she appeared in the image of a man, dressed in a tuxedo and trousers, she attracted the attention of many to a progressive trouser look.

It is enough to buy a VOVK suit to look just as bright and impressive.

Despite the popularization of trousers, the general public was not ready to break free from the shackles of customs and was quite skeptical about women’s trousers for a long time.

However, the man who really managed to get around prohibitions and beliefs was Yves Saint Laurent. He erased the boundary between women’s and men’s fashion. In 1966, Yves released a stunning collection of trouser suits that attracted the attention of many girls. No prohibitions could stop women in their quest to wear trouser suits. Thus the era of women’s trouser suits has started – “Le Smoking”.

We recommend buying a VOVK women’s trouser suit to feel like an icon of style.

The last breakthrough was the image of Audrey Hepburn from the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, where she appeared in capri pants.

HISTORICAL TWISTS

Another extremely important period in our history is the war. In the war and post-war times, a heavy burden fell on the fragile female shoulders. Due to the lack of “spare hands”, many of our predecessors had to work at the factories and perform difficult men’s work. And it is logical that a puff skirt in flowers is not the best option for such work.

We are grateful for all the women who have made an effort so that each of us can wear trousers freely and not be judged for our choice.

THE BIGGEST SCANDALS IN THE FASHION WORLD https://vovk.com/magazine/eu/samye-gromkie-skandaly-v-mire-feshn-industrii-2/ Tue, 11 Aug 2020 10:39:57 +0000 https://vovk.com/magazine/ru/?p=13648 WHAT ABOUT THE CONTEXT?

Not long ago, in the 1980, 15-year-old Brooke Shields became the face of the brand in one of the advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein. She starred in quite controversial commercials. The stumbling block was the phrase: “Do you want to know what is between me and my jeans? Nothing”.

And as you can guess, society exploded with allegations of child pornography. A well-known feminist Gloria Steinem said that advertising provoked violence against women.

The apogee of the scandal was the temporary suspension of production of this very jeans model up to 1998!

NOT QUITE LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS

In 2004, the world of the fashion industry exploded with the news that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana could face a real court sentence – two years in prison. Well-known fashion designers were accused of tax dodging in the amount of 400 million Euros!

The allegations were made due to the fact that in the same 2004, Domenico and Stefano sold their brands for a billion Euros to a fake holding in Luxembourg. This enabled them to avoid the high tax rate in Italy, and pay lower taxes in Luxembourg.

This was the unfair game of the eminent fashion designers.

FAREWELL MR. GALIANO

Another shocking event rocked the fashion world in 2011. This time, John Galliano took the place of honor as a troublemaker. Outrageous fashion designer went for outrageous actions.

Galliano was accused of harsh anti-Semitic remarks and violent behavior. The matter is that while visiting a Parisian restaurant, the designer drank too much, insulted a couple sitting next to him and got into a fight. In addition to this, there was a video where everything was captured.

This behavior caused a negative wave among colleagues and some celebrities. The result of the fiasco was the dismissal of Galliano from the Christian Dior fashion house.

PERFUME SCANDAL

Belle D’Opium is one of the most notorious perfumes ever released. Its fame is as loud as the name.

For the first time, people protested against it around the 1980s, when the perfume was just released. The Chinese emigrants in the U.S. demanded to change the name of the perfume. They were associated with a drug that was popular in China and killed thousands of people.

But in 2000, an advertising campaign for perfume literally blew people’s eyes. The thing is that the advertisement featured a completely naked model lying on dark blue velvet. This work of art has been recognized by the UK Advertising Standards Commission as the most controversial printed ad in the fashion world.

KARL LAGERFELD VS H&M

The popular Swedish brand H&M is known for its collaborations with famous fashion designers Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, Roberto Cavalli, Sonya Rykiel, Lanvin and others, but the pioneer was Karl Lagerfeld. The designer’s creations were sold out immediately on the first day of the sales.

The snag in this story was a personal insult. In an interview, Lagerfeld spoke sharply about the brand. Lagerfeld declared that the management was full of complete snobs, they released a reduced number of models for sale. Moreover, his entire collection created in small and medium sizes was released in the entire size grid. The main argument of Karl Lagerfeld was laconic: “I make clothes for the graceful and slender people!”.
